Introduction:
On 5th March 2025, the 12-Namphing Gram Panchayat Unit (GPU) successfully organized an Awareness Program on Legal Provisions Related to Children and Human Trafficking under the 15th Finance Commission (UNTIED) – GPDP 2023-24. The event was held at Namphing Secondary School and aimed to educate students and the local community about child rights, legal protections, and the dangers of human trafficking.
Objective of the Program:
- To spread awareness about the laws protecting children and legal provisions against human trafficking.
- To empower students and community members to identify and report cases of trafficking and child abuse.
- To encourage active participation of children in Bal Sabha (Children’s Assembly) and local governance.
Key Highlights of the Awareness Program:
- Experts from the legal and social welfare departments provided insights into laws like The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Juvenile Justice Act, and The Immoral Trafficking Prevention Act.
- Interactive sessions were conducted, where students shared their thoughts and concerns regarding child safety.
- Awareness materials such as pamphlets, posters, and videos were displayed to reinforce key messages.
Bal Sabha Election – Encouraging Democratic Participation:
In addition to the awareness program, a Bal Sabha Election was conducted to select student representatives for the Bal Sabha Panchayat. This initiative aimed to promote leadership, democracy, and decision-making skills among students.
Election Process:
- Students from Namphing Secondary School participated in a voting system to elect their Bal Sabha Panchayat President and other key members.
- A secret ballot voting method was used to ensure fair and transparent elections.
- Candidates campaigned among their peers, presenting their vision for child welfare and school development.
- The election process helped students understand the importance of voting, leadership, and governance at the grassroots level.
Conclusion & Impact:
The program successfully sensitized students and the community on child rights and legal protection against human trafficking. The Bal Sabha election served as a valuable learning experience, fostering leadership skills and democratic values among students.
The 12-Namphing GPU aims to continue such initiatives to empower children and strengthen awareness regarding social and legal issues in the community.
